Toki’s Notes on NYC

Street Crossing

1. CROSSING THE STREET: Look both ways and wait for your owner. Know how to dodge shuffling feet and swinging bags (especially ones with laptops in them).

2. TAXIS: Pick a taxi cab driver that says “HELLO” to you. If they drive off the minute they see you, don’t take it personally! While in the taxi, STAY ALERT (especially if your Mom has motion sickness from the taxi ride),  STAY INFORMED (many taxi’s have their own TV’s with the local news) and STAY AWAKE…there’s just as much to see in the evening as during the day in this city!

3. GOING POTTY: Obviously, if you can’t make it to the park in time, find the nearest tree. If Mom had taken a photo of me in action rather than just my target, then I could have shown you how to strategically scooch into position (urban dictionary defines scooch as “v. to move the buttocks over…”)AND DO NOT go potty while crossing the street!

Safari Photos in NYC with Mark McQueen

Here are some of my favorite pictures from my photoshoot with New York City photographer Mark McQueen.  I chose to do one of Mark’s “Safari” photoshoots where he follows you around the city capturing spontaneous moments on the fly – boy was that fun!

Some more about my photographer… Mark McQueen developed his technical and creative chops as a commercial photographer working for Fortune 100 companies in Manhattan starting in 1982, and in 1996 started his website www.phoDOGraphy.com. His dog photos have appeared in several publications, including the cover of City Dogs, by J.C. Suares and a spread in Modern Dog Magazine. He specializes in capturing your unique personality in his photo sessions. Mark also volunteers extensively for Animal Haven, a no-kill shelter and sanctuary in New York City, from which he has also adopted several pets.

BlogPaws in Denver

Dear BlogPaws Attendees,
We’re finally here in Denver after a quick plane ride from San Antonio, TX! A 2 hour flight is quick compared to all the traveling I’ve been doing! Mom and I drove through a tropical storm to San Antonio, TX on Tuesday and I got in a lot of trouble for trying to attack the windshield wipers. I see them on the car in CA but they never move. Flying in the airplane over Denver was pretty cool cuz the clouds were really fluffy!

So here’s a quickie on what I have been up to so you know little bit about me….

I left Los Angeles with my Mom in June to go meet a Beagle, a Bunny and a Boy in Rhode Island! We drove across the country to meet them…and made many new friends along the way! We were supposed to be back in CA by mid-August but between Mom’s other job, Grandpa’s heart attack, my unexpected 2nd surgery, a 5k Mud Run and 2 unexpected trips from the east coast back to LA, we had to take a lot of breaks, not to mention driving 10k miles. After Denver, we’re going to be spending a few weeks in TX (it’s a big state)!

Anyways, please don’t be too hard on my Mom for not having our BLOG even barely started. It would be grrrrreat if you could give her some encouragement and tips as I think she might have “Blogger’s Block.” I’ve been busy going through my travel journal of the past 82 days and I think I’m ready to get started on my blog too!

By the way, if you want to visit me, I LOVE ATTENTION but a couple of warnings:

1) Please don’t put your face in my face as it makes me nervous…but don’t be surprised if I jump up to kiss your face! And I’m very quick so if you are not okay with close encounters of the wet kind, you might want to keep your mouth closed.

2) I just had 5 sets of stitches removed and my under belly is sensitive so if I roll over to ask for belly rubs, please be gentle.

Looking forward to meeting you!
Toki x

p.s. I like kitties better than other doggies but don’t be afraid to come say hi. AND if you haven’t already joined Toki Poki™ – don’t forget you get a discount!

It never rains in Southern California

Today we got caught in the rain in Washington DC. I was prepared but Mom was NOT. I’m from Los Angeles (where it never rains), so I don’t own a raincoat.  But while we were in San Francisco (where it rains all the time), Mom decided to buy me one at our favorite pet shop, CHEENGOO, on Union Street. (Check out these YELP ratings!) We also picked up a few other items for our road trip…a travel luggage tag (can you guess which one I got?), a Molly Mutt Dog Duvet, (It’s eco-friendly! You fill it with old clothes or your old dog bed so it’s brand new and comfy – perfect for a road trip and dirty clothes) and Cheengoo’s Spritzer (makes everything smell really good after driving for a few hours in the car…with Mom). You should definitely stop by to check out all the cool stuff and meet Abi and her owner, Liz. Abi let me take a photo with her and she has Toki Poki™ cards too! Did you know that if you’re a fan of Cheengoo and you join TokiPoki.com, you can sport their logo and website on the back of your cards?

And by the way Snyder…I saw your photo on Facebook. Next time you go to work at the office, check out these ties at Cheengoo.

And if you’re nowhere near SF, then go online and SHOP! (Muffin and Cupcake, you click on the “Feline Friends” — Tartine, you click on “Canine Friends”). Liz not only designed the Cheengoo website, she also designs and makes all of the beautiful collars, harnesses and leads. My favorite style is the Evening Stroll (see below) because it looks like grass. It’s too bad it doesn’t match my complexion or I’d have the collar and lead now.

If you want to see more of the collars and these amazing dogs, visit NUENA PHOTOGRAPHY. GREAT PHOTOS! If you haven’t already checked her out, Kira Stackhouse is a pet photographer (check out Project Dog – super cool idea!)

By the way, did you see the tiny Boston Terrier puppy? That’s Harley (here’s another photo Mom found while stalking him) — when I was a puppy, I was just as cute!!

Well, since it was raining today, I decided there was no better time than now to start blogging. If my Mom had built my site 10 years ago when we were both pups, then we’d be painting the town in D.C. but I’m ready to jump back into bed and take another nap. If you’re in DC, take your owners here: Hotel Madera. They know who’s important…
